A petition is circulating that’s been sent out and paid for by Representative Beto O’Rourke’s Congress Committee. The goal is to send a message to congress that veterans should be allowed to discuss medical marijuana as an option for treatment with their VA doctors.
“We’ve agreed that when these veterans come back and transition into civilian life that we’re going to be there for their medical needs whatever they are”, says O’Rourke.
Even if that need is medical marijuana. O’Rourke says medical science shows that in some cases medical marijuana is an appropriate part of veteran treatment. Whether it’s used to treat intense pain, glaucoma or PTSD.
Medical marijuana is currently legal in 25 states, Texas is not one of them.
“Right now we’re talking about making sure that in those states where marijuana is already legal, VA doctors are able to discuss marijuana as a possible treatment option”, says O’Rourke.
Congressman O’Rourke says they have seem some political support from the House of Representative from both Democrats and Republicans but there is still some work to be done in the Senate. O’Rourke says the goal is to bring the VA into the 21st century of medicine, health care and taking care of veterans.
