Whether you enjoy sports or not, it’s a guarantee that the Olympics are going to dominate your TV screen, social feed, and conversations for the next two weeks. So, settle in, roll on up, and puff along to some of these crazy sports to watch while under the influence.
1. Fencing
One of the big headlines throughout this Olympics has been Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first U.S. athlete to compete in hijab. Muhammad won her opening round match on August 8th, but lost in the round of 16.
Muhammad was the reason I initially watched the fencing tournament, but after lighting a blunt and watching some of the matches, the sport really started to resonant with me.
Watching fencing is pretty much our childhood “sword-fighting” battles with sticks coming to life, and being played on a professional level.
Fencing matches a quick moving, with points coming rapidly. The set-up is full of flashing lights to keep your attention and help keep track of who is winning. Rules are fairly easy to understand. The style of game depends on the sword used, a foil, epee, or sabre, and points are scored by touching the tip of the sword to any part of the opponents body.
The women’s tournament is already complete, but the men’s tournament is taking place throughout the day on August 10th.
Also, the court they play on looks like a Harry Potter Wizarding Duel zone. Awesome.
2. Basketball
Let’s face it; the best part of watching the Olympics is watching the USA win gold medals. When it comes to that, there is no better sport to watch the US dominance than in basketball. That goes for both the men’s and women’s team.
The women’s team set an Olympic record their first game by defeating Senegal by 65 points. The men’s team have had the same success by defeating China 119 – 63, and then Venezuela 113-69.
Nothing makes someone feel more patriotic than sparking a bowl, laying back, and watching Americans dominate at a sport we created. USA! USA!
The men’s team takes on Australia on August 10th for their next game. The women play Serbia on the same day.
3. Field Hockey
This was a sport that I watched for the first time this Olympics, as well. If you’ve never watched a match, the easiest way to describe it would be a hybrid of soccer and hockey. Players run and move like a typical soccer match, but play with tiny hockey sticks.
There are a few reasons why this sport is great to watch stoned. First, the players run around hunched over for most of game, and it looks pretty hilarious. Second, the penalty corner’s are pretty awesome. Essentially, both teams charge at each other while the ball is play out to the shooting team. Watch the video below to see some examples.
The third reason to watch field hockey is the notoriously attractive women’s Netherland team. Dubbed the most beautiful team in the world.
