Lee County, Fla. – Several places in Southwest Florida are looking ahead at regulating the new medical marijuana amendment in the state.
The Village of Estero council will meet Wednesday night to begin preparing for how they want to regulate the use of marijuana within their region.
There are two types of cannabis physicians will be able to prescribe patients – low-THC cannabis and medical cannabis.
Estero is not the only city in SWFL discussing how they’ll govern medical marijuana locally, once the terms of the law are finalized on the state level.
In Estero they’ll discuss delaying dispenseries. Also on Wednesday, the Bonita Springs council will talk about using medical marijuana in public.
And in Charlotte County, commissioners have already decided they’ll have a 9-month moratorium on medical cannabis dispensaries to figure out how they will regulate them.
It could still be at least a year before new patients can use medical marijuana. Beginning on January 3rd, lawmakers will have 6 months to make the law and decide things like who can grown the marijuana and where. After that the Department of Health will be in charge of putting new rules into action, which could take several months.
