Welcome to Leafly’s Product Reviews, where we take a closer look at a cannabis gadget, accessory, or consumable, and give it a test spin. Today we’re trying out Deviant Dabs‘ wax concentrates.
Deviant Dabs prides itself on high-quality concentrates and the brand’s wax is my latest obsession, especially now that I have a Firefly 2 so I can vape (in my opinion, the flavor profile is so much easier to appreciate with a vaporizer rather than a traditional dab rig).
The company, which describes its products as “artisanal,” is based in Mendocino County. I chatted with CEO and co-founder Meg Champion about her process. “I strive to hold myself responsible to make sure I source the purest, cleanest, highest quality grown cannabis in Mendocino,” she said. “We carefully extract small-batches of strain specific cannabis using organically grown material whenever possible. Knowing your strain helps to ensure that it tests for higher terpenes and we know that creates a more robust flavor.”
Deviant Dabs currently offers three types of concentrates: wax, shatter, and rosin. The wax and shatter are BHO extracted but refined so that there are no detectable solvents other than ethanol, according to the SC Labs results. Rosin products are extracted using nothing more than heat and pressure, rendering them solventless.
In this review, I’m focusing on two wax products, Granddaddy Purple and Blue Dream, because I thought it would be fun to compare and contrast them.
Deviant Dabs’ Wax at a Glance
Manufacturer: Deviant Dabs
Product: Wax
Retail Price: $40 per .5g
Extraction Method: BHO
Packaging: I’m impressed with the packaging concept. Although the products are decidedly marketed toward women (the clamshell case is reminiscent of a makeup compact), the gender-neutral black and white color scheme makes it something that all individuals could carry. The compact is sleek and elegant. Silicone inserts line the inside, which prevent the product from sticking and make it easier to scoop it out with a dab tool.
Appearance: Frequently hashtagged #sugarwax on social media, you’ll flip open the compact to find a pebble-shaped nug of crumbly wax. The surface of the wax sparkles like glitter in the light. It’s pretty.
Granddaddy Purple Wax
If someone brought me a bouquet of Deviant Dabs’ GDP wax nugs, I would be overjoyed. The scent is delightful and pleasantly strong. It’s predominantly piney, but with some floral and berry notes when you give it a second sniff. When I let my roommate smell it, he started inhaling so deeply that one almost went up his nose.
I broke off a ladybug-sized crumble of wax and placed it onto the metal concentrate pad. The flavor tastes immediately like berry, but with a hint of savory on the finish. Like a blueberry tart with a sweet and salty crumble on top, with just a hint of lemon.
The high is calm with a relaxed, stoney body. I didn’t find it sleepy or couchlock-inducing. My head stayed mostly clear with some vague fogginess around the edges when I tried to think of what I ate for lunch yesterday. Oh yes, hungry. Hungry definitely happens with this one.
Blue Dream Wax
If you put the two waxes side by side, Blue Dream is the more orange one whereas GDP is on the mustard side of orange. The scent is less powerful than GDP and has more of a citrus scent with some faint berry overtones. Blue Dream’s taste is mildly fruity, but not quite as flavorful as GDP; instead, I get a citrusy flavor with a bit of pine in the aftertaste.
The high is also fairly mild, with a very clear head and a soothing effect on the body. It delivered body sensations are floaty in the extremities but grounded in the core. I also found that Blue Dream was helpful in counteracting a headache that was starting to descend. It was a great high for reading a book on a rainy day — chill but not lazy.
Overall, Grandaddy Purple wins my vote if I had to choose between these two Deviant Dabs waxes. Blue Dream is also great, especially for pain, but for me, GDP had more potent taste and effects.
