Albuquerque, N.M. – The state’s largest medical marijuana grower could be in jeopardy of losing its license after it was booted from the New Mexico State Fair.
When you think of the New Mexico State Fair, you think of the rides, and the food, but on the first day of this year’s fair, the biggest attraction was Dorothy, a 4-foot-tall cannabis plant.
“She’s about 21 days old, she’s in organic soil, 15-gallon pot,” said Eric Howard, Ultra Health’s Master Grower.
Ultra Health set up the plant at its booth inside Expo New Mexico Thursday.
“We’re just trying to remove some of the negative stigma that surrounds this plant and the medicine that it provides the people of New Mexico,” Howard said.
State fair officials confirm they told Ultra Health to pack up and leave because the contract it signed with Ultra Health prohibits drug-related merchandise and paraphernalia.
A state fair spokesperson said the plant violated the agreement.
“The New Mexico State Fair administration unfortunately hasn’t been as supportive as we wanted them to,” Howard said.
The fair is a family-friendly event, but one mom said she didn’t see a problem with it.
“No one’s smoking it in front of my kid. It is a plant. If they asked about it, I’d have to explain, and I don’t see an issue with it,” Atrelle Padilla said.
The Department of Health has very strict rules when it comes to medical marijuana.
A spokesperson confirmed they are looking into the incident and will take appropriate disciplinary action, which could include shutting down Ultra Health’s operation.
