Cannabidiol oil, or CBD oil, is one of the most common cannabinoids found in marijuana, along with THC. This oil is extracted from industrial hemp instead of recreational marijuana and sold in states across the country where it has already been legalized.

Although it is still not legally permitted in every state, it has risen in popularity over the last few years because of its medicinal uses. Consumers use CBD oil to alleviate general aches and pains, headaches, anxiety and other common ailments. It can currently be found in many forms including capsules, topical creams and tinctures. But, manufacturers have now found a new way to use CBD oil and wholesale distributors, retailers and consumers may be surprised to learn that it’s in dog treats!

Companies such as Barkables and Treatibles have launched new lines of dog treats that are infused with highly refined CBD oil. Barkables claims that the treats will help contribute to dogs leading a happier, healthier and longer life, although these claims have not been confirmed with research. Treatibles, on the other hand, refers to their treats as “super food wellness treats for animals.”

These companies are not the first—and probably not the last—company to launch CBD oil products designed for four-legged, furry friends. The CBD oil market is only expected to grow bigger in the next few years, so its expansion into other areas such as pet care comes as no surprise to industry experts and wholesale distributors who have watched CBD oil rise in popularity.

Why exactly do dogs need products like these Barkable and Treatibles treats with CBD oil? Don’t worry, dog owners—these treats aren’t designed to give puppies a high. Unlike THC, CBD oil does not create a mind-altering, high effect. Whereas high concentrations of THC are used in recreational marijuana to achieve this high, CBD oil is mainly found in medicinal marijuana strains to help patients deal with pain.

Dog owners are hopeful that treats with CBD oil can help calm anxious dogs down while owners are away on vacation or during a loud thunderstorm. In fact, Barkables was banking on owners trying their treats during Fourth of July weekend, since many dogs get so scared from the noise of fireworks that they run away from home to escape it.

Of course, before you let your dog nibble his way through a CBD oil treat, it’s wise to always speak to your pet’s veterinarian. Many veterinarians believe CBD oil products for pups are a safe alternative to prescription narcotics that could be used to treat anxiety. Just like you would never take a new medication without consulting with a doctor, you shouldn’t try treats with new ingredients without getting approval from the vet!
