A new poll out of Massachusetts shows that likely voters in the state are poised to approve Question 4 this November, which would legalize the recreational use and distribution of cannabis for everyone 21 and older.

According to the new poll – conducted in conjunction between WBZ-TV, WBZ NewsRadio and UMass Amherst – 53% of Massachusetts voters likely to vote in the upcoming election are in support of Question 4 to legalize cannabis, with 40% opposed. Just 7% are undecided, meaning if every undecided person decided to oppose the initiative, it would still enjoy a 6% lead.

The poll found majority support among almost all demographic categories, with only self-described conservatives, and those over 55, opposing the initiative.

Of those in support of the measure, the top reason, at 30%, was simply because cannabis is “not as dangerous as other drugs.” The main reason for opposition to the measure (with 36% of those opposed stating it as such) is the potential harm associated with its use.

If Question 4 is passed into law this November 8th, it will be legal for those 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of cannabis in public, and up to 10 ounces at a private residence. The personal cultivation of up to six cannabis plants would also be legal, as would the purchase of cannabis through state-licensed cannabis retail outlets.
