Lansing, MI – Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday signed bills legalizing and regulating medical marijuana edibles and dispensaries.

“This new law will help Michiganders of all ages and with varying medical conditions access safe products to relieve their suffering,” Snyder said. “We can finally implement a solid framework that gives patients a safe source from which to purchase and utilize medical marijuana.”

The voter-initiated law failed to address some issues that proved key in the law’s implementation. Lawsuits ensued, leaving both dispensaries for medical marijuana and edible forms of the drug in legal grey areas. A trip of bills to legalize and regulate dispensaries, as well as legalize edibles, cleared the Senate earlier this month.

That paved the way for a final House approval and landed the bills on Snyder’s desk.

Snyder praised diligent work by the legislature on the bills in signing them Tuesday.

Rep. Mike Callton, R-Nashville, sponsored one of the bills. He said last week that the bills help medical marijuana patients.

“These bills are for the patients. They will help children with seizure disorders, they will help people with cancer maintain their quality of life,” Callton said.
