SAN JUAN, PR (HWN) — The first medical marijuana dispensaries are now open in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico.
Outgoing Governor Alejandro García Padilla, who issued an executive order authorizing medical marijuana in 2015, told the Associated Press on Friday that the first two dispensaries have opened.
There are 1,953 patients currently registered with Puerto Rico’s health department authorized to use medical marijuana, but smoking the plant is not allowed.
Patients can obtain medical marijuana in various forms including pills, creams, patches and oral drops.
