The decision on where the growing, processing and dispensing of medical cannabis will take place in Sykesville town limits could soon be in the hands of the town Planning Commission.
Earlier this month, the Sykesville Town Council requested that the commission look into the town’s zoning ordinance, said Town Clerk Kerry Chaney. The group will look at the town’s current law and determine where facilities for growing, processing and dispensing would best fit, according to documents from the town.
While more research will have to be done, a town staff report indicated that those activities may be widely permitted under current town zoning.
For example, the report said, all residential districts and conservation districts in the town limits list agriculture as a principal permitted use. The Planned Employment Center district permits pharmacies. The Local Business District allows for clinics.
Therefore, the report said, it is possible that licensed medical cannabis operations could be eligible to operate in these districts unless the town approves further restrictions targeted specifically toward cannabis businesses.
Only one company has been granted state preapproval for growing and processing of medical cannabis in Carroll County, though county officials have said they do not know where the business plans to open and efforts by the Carroll County Times to reach the owners have been unsuccessful. That company is Maryland Compassionate Care and Wellness LLC, which has also applied to operate dispensaries in Senate Districts 5 and 9, which include Carroll County.
