The CEO of Coachella’s first medical marijuana business will be helping to raise money to fund the University of California, Irvine’s cannabis research team next week at The End of Opiates symposium.
The event, which takes place at the Avenue of the Arts Hotel in Costa Mesa Aug. 26, will focus on the possibilities of medical marijuana research while raising money for Dr. Daniele Piomelli, Dr. Moreno Sanz and the research team at UC Irvine.
Piomelli, a professor of anatomy and neurobiology at UC Irvine, has long researched cannabinoid systems and functions. Sanz, who finished his Ph.D. dissertation while working in Piomelli’s lab, has a similar focus.
The two will give presentations at The End of Opiates, Piomelli on “The Future of Pain Management” and Sanz on “Specific Research Paths.”
Also in attendance will be Stephen Goldner, a forensic toxicologist and attorney who has spent decades as a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisor and is credited with developing a liquid dose form of methadone.
He will give a speech titled “Cannabis Therapeutics & the FDA.”
Justin Beck, the leader of Cultivation Technologies, Inc., which plans to open its 111,500-square foot marijuana growth and manufacturing facility in Coachella this November, will open the evening with a welcome speech to attendees, according to the event brochure.
Beck told The Desert Sun he sees great potential for marijuana in the medical world, especially when it comes to substituting drugs such as hydrocodone and oxycodone that have been linked to increasing the likelihood of future drug addictions.
“I’m very passionate about cannabis,” he said. “I think not only it is it a civil liberty for all adults, but medical cannabis has a lot of opportunities to replace pharmaceuticals in the medical world.”
Cultivation Technologies is especially dedicated to assisting Piomelli and his UC Irvine research team, Beck said, whether that be through future donations or the use of their facility for research space.
“I really like Dr. Sanz,” Beck said. “He’s a scientist, he’s not a cannabis activist, and he says it’s ridiculous that we can’t study (marijuana) more in depth.”
