Fairbanks – The assembly postponed its vote on a ban of marijuana consumption facilities after the regular meeting Thursday ran long – seven hours long.
The measure will come up again at the Aug. 11 meeting under unfinished business, according to John Davies, presiding officer of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly.
The panel took public testimony on the proposed ban before adjourning at about
1 a.m. Friday.
Most of the comments favored cannabis cafes as safe alternatives to bars, good for tourism and on par with the options afforded the alcohol industry.
Among those giving testimony were Brandon Emmett, a member of the Alaska Marijuana Control Board, and Shaun Tacke, who is seeking election to Borough Assembly.
Karen Perdue, former state commissioner of the Department of Health and Social Services, testified against having marijuana consumption facilities in Fairbanks.
No other American city allows them, she said.
“I don’t see why we want to be the first place in North America, or in any other place, to have these consumption sites,” she said.
The assembly also gave a nod to five state license applications for marijuana cultivation businesses and adopted new regulations for judging state license applications.
The new criteria for judging the license applications is comparable to what is in the Code of Ordinances for the alcohol industry.
