Queensland Health is searching for 30 children with severe treatment-resistant epilepsy to take part in a medicinal cannabis trial.
It comes after the State Government last week passed laws allowing people with certain conditions to access the drug under the supervision of a medical professional.
The clinical trials will involve ‘Epidiolex‘ – a cannabis plant-derived pharmaceutical product – produced by a UK-based company.
Queensland Health now needs up to 30 children who are under the care of a paediatric neurologist to take part in the trial at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.
The agency also said, in a statement, that not every child who takes part in the trial will benefit from the drug because of the complexity of treating treatment-resistant epilepsy.
“However it is expected that some children will have a reduction in seizures and it is hoped that some may become seizure free,” it said.
“As with all clinical trials the children will need to be carefully monitored for side effects and to ensure that they do not experience any drug interactions with other medicines they may be taking.”
Families who want to register their interest can talk to their doctor or call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) to register an expression of interest.
Recruitment for the trials is expected to start in November, with the actual trials to start before the end of the year.
