Pico Rivera – A proposal to legalize medical marijuana dispensaries was killed Tuesday when council members took no action on the plan.
After nearly two hours of debate, no one was willing to make a motion in favor, with Mayor David Armenta the only council member speaking in favor.
Council members said they saw no reason to legalize it after learning that Proposition 64, the legalization measure on the November ballot, allows cities to ban medical and/or recreational marijuana.
“If Proposition 64 changed something and put us into a position where we’d be vulnerable … I would be in favor of getting in front of this,” Councilman Gregory Salcido said. “But it seems there is no need to because Proposition 64 changes absolutely nothing.”
The Planning Commission last week voted 4-1 to recommend zoning changes allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to set up in the city.
Dispensaries have been banned in Pico Rivera since 2008,.
City Manager Rene Bobadilla had told the council the making them legal would make it easier to police and regulate and recovering the necessary costs of enforcement.
Bobadilla said it cost the city $75,000 to shut one dispensary down.
